  • WinMerge 2.14.0 was the last version with VC++ 2008 runtimes for Windows 2000.
  • WinMerge 2.12.4 was the last version for Windows 95/98/ME/NT and the last ANSI build.

Security & integrity

SHA-256 checksums

Official release materials publish SHA-256 digests for each package. Hash the file locally and compare character for character before you run the installer.

Signatures & source transparency

WinMerge is open source under GPLv2. The full source archive ships with each stable release so reviewers can inspect the code that produced the binaries.

AV notes

Antivirus false positives

Heuristic scanners sometimes flag new open-source installers. WinMerge is a long-running GPLv2 project with public source.

  1. Verify the SHA-256 digest against the published checksum for that exact filename.
  2. Confirm you obtained the file from your winmerge.io download button.
  3. Submit the sample to your AV vendor as a false positive if the hash matches.
  4. Prefer the per-user installer when corporate policy blocks machine-wide setup.
